The American Psychological Association defines self-esteem as “a generalized evaluative attitude toward the self that influences both moods behaviors.” Rouse (2010) asserts that the self-esteem of adolescent girls becomes compromised due to the unique social standards of their environment and these challenges are greater than those of previous generations. In an earlier study, Paxton (2006) suggests that poor self-esteem is a result of negative body image that results in depression in teen girls. According to Etcoff et al (2004, 2007),

·      Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful (up from 2% in 2004)

·      Only 11% of girls globally are comfortable using the word beautiful to describe themselves

·      72% of girls feel tremendous pressure to be beautiful

·      80% of women agree that every woman has something about her that is beautiful but do not see their own beauty

·      More than half (54%) of women globally agree that when it comes to how they look, they are their own worst beauty critic

Girls form identity and self-esteem during adolescence, and according to Orenstein (1994), in this crucial developmental period girls experience a “free-fall” in self-esteem and many never recover from such a life-altering fall. Additional studies link negative self-esteem to a variety of negative outcomes that include teen pregnancy, substance abuse, suicide, depression, social anxiety, juvenile delinquency, and alienation (Gurney, 1986).

Over the years, counselors employed a variety of therapeutic modalities to target negative outcomes in the lives of adolescent females. The identified counseling approaches used most by clinicians include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Adlerian Therapy and Client Centered Therapy.

Be-You! Foundation is committed to offering an effective Self-Esteem Boot Camp program filled with creative activities and a well-designed curriculum for adolescent girls. Boot camp classes focus on addressing the participant’s core fears that prevent them from completely believing in themselves. The Self-Esteem Boot Camp is specifically designed to teach young women to manage emotions, build healthy decision-making skills and understand the importance of team building skills. Performing arts methods that include drama, dance and modeling are used as a teaching tool to offer participants the opportunity to develop confidence, courage and character. This creative boot camp will assist participants to overcome fears, failures, anxieties, depression, distraction and anything that restricts them from achieving success.
